Boric acid toxicity to the German cockroach, Blattella germanica: Alterations in midgut structure, and acetylcholinesterase and glutathione S-transfe…
2006
0048-3575 doi: DOI: 10.1016/j.pestbp.2005.05.002; Oral toxicity of boric acid, an inorganic insecticide, was evaluated on German cockroach, Blattella germanica L. (Dictyoptera, Blattellidae). Newly emerged adults were exposed to various concentrations of boric acid incorporated into the diet. Results showed that treated insects exhibited toxic symptoms with a dose-dependent mortality. Histological study of midgut revealed alterations in the epithelial cells and a signiWcant increase in the epithelium thickness. In a second series of experiments, the compound was investigated on the activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). Data showed that the compound…
A Difficult Case of Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused By Acinetobacter baumannii
2010
This study reports the case of a 55-year-old woman with diabetes with a necrotizing fasciitis of the right lower limb and the perineum, first admitted at the emergency department for septic shock with cardiac arrest, and later transferred to the department of surgery. Microbiological and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Acinetobacter baumanii. A broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was administered and later readjusted according to the results of microbiological culture. Intensive hemodynamic support was required. Wounds were dressed daily with a 3 percent boric acid solution and a silver sulfadiazine-impregnated dressing. An extensive s…
Toxicity of boric acid to Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) and analysis of residues in several organs
2001
1373-7503 (Print) Journal Article; Pestiferous cockroach species are associated closely with humans and are important from medical and public health points of view. Conventional insecticides have been used widely to control cockroaches which have developed resistance to these compounds. Thus, interest has again centered on lesser-used compounds such as boric acid. Boric acid has been used as an insecticide for many years, especially against cockroach. Its mode of action on insects has not been satisfactorily established. In Algeria, Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) is a serious pest in the urban environment and their infestation were controlled for many years by organophospha…
BYOTYPES AND RANDOMLY AMPLIFIED POLYMORPHIC DNA (RAPD) PROFILES OF SUBGINGIVAL CANDIDA ALBICANS ISOLATES IN HIV INFECTION
2005
ABSTRACT: A group of subgingival isolates of C. albicans recovered from Italian HIV-positive (HIV+) subjects were characterized both phenotypically and genotypically. Phenotyping of the isolates was carried out by a biotyping method based on the enzyme profiles, carbohydrate assimilation patterns and boric acid resistance of the yeasts. Genotyping was performed through randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Five biotypes were found among the 29 subgingival C. albicans strains examined. The predominant biotypes were A1R (55.17%), A1S (24.14%), and A2R (13.79%), while the biotypes A11R and A13R were represented by a single isolate each. RAPD profiles identified 15 genotypes among…
ESR response to gamma-rays of alanine pellets containing B(OH)3 or Gd2O3.
2007
ESR response to gamma-irradiation (1-50 Gy) of blends containing alanine and either B(OH)(3) or Gd(2)O(3) is reported. The sensitivity of the alanine--B(OH)(3) blend is comparable to the sensitivity of pure alanine, although its lowest detectable dose, LDD, is smaller ( approximately 1.3 Gy) than that of pure alanine ( approximately 2.9 Gy). Alanine with Gd(2)O(3) is about two times more sensitive than pure alanine, and its LDD is 0.8 Gy. The better sensitivity and LDD are probably due to the high atomic number (Z=64) of gadolinium, which enhances the interaction probability with photons and, consequently, the radical yield. This study suggests that other high-Z atoms may be useful for incr…
Selective determination of trimethylamine in air by liquid chromatography using solid phase extraction cartridges for sampling.
2004
Abstract The selective determination of trimethylamine (TMA) in air by liquid chromatography is reported. Sampling is effected by flushing air through C18-packed solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges at a flow rate of 15 mL/min for 15 min. Next, TMA is desorbed from the cartridges and injected into the chromatographic system. The analyte is then selectively retained on a precolumn ( 20 mm ×2.1 mm i.d., packed with 30 μm, Hypersil C18 phase), and derivatized on-line by injecting 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC). Finally, the TMA-FMOC derivative is transferred to the analytical column ( 125 mm ×4 mm i.d., LiChrospher 100 RP18, 5 μm), and monitored at 262 nm. The method was applied to …
The determination of antimony and arsenic concentrations in fly ash by hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry
2011
Abstract Hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HG-ICP-OES) was used in the determination of As and Sb concentrations in fly ash samples. The effect of sample pre-treatment reagents and measurement parameters used for hydride generation was evaluated. Due to memory effects observed, the appropriate read delay time was adjusted to 60 s resulting in RSDs 0.6% and 2.3% for As and Sb, respectively. The most suitable volumes of pre-reduction reagents for 10 mL of sample were 4 mL of KI/ascorbic acid (5%) and 6 mL of HCl (conc.). The determination of Sb was significantly interfered by HF, but the interference could be eliminated by adding 2 mL of saturated bo…
Investigation of magnesium phosphate cement hydration in diluted suspension and its retardation by boric acid
2016
Abstract Magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) are used for rapid repair works, but they may also offer prospects for the stabilization/solidification of deleterious waste. MPCs contain calcined magnesium oxide and a water-soluble acid phosphate, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH 2 PO 4 ). The main precipitated hydrate is then K-struvite (MgKPO 4 ·6H 2 O). This work aims at giving new insight into the processes involved in its formation. Since cement hydration is very rapid, the second objective is to understand how boric acid, a common admixture for field application, retards cement hydration. A multi-stage process is evidenced in diluted suspension: MgHPO 4 ·7H 2 O likely precipitat…
Flow injection spectrophotometric determination of boron in ceramic materials.
1998
Abstract A flow injection spectrophotometric method for the determination of boron in ceramic materials is described. The method is based on spectrophotometric measurement of the decrease in the pH produced by the reaction between boric acid and mannitol in the presence of an acid-base indicator. A bichannel FI (flow injection) manifold in which the sample solutions were injected into deionized water (at pH 5.4) and the stream was later merged with the reagent stream (a mannitol solution containing 1×10 −4 mol l −1 bromocresol green at pH 5.4), was used. Transient signals were monitored at 616 nm. A theoretical model which describes the dependence between the absorbance values and boric aci…
On-line bi-directional electrostacking for As speciation/preconcentration using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry.
2006
A method using bi-directional electrostacking (BDES) in a flow system is presented for As preconcentration and speciation analysis. Some parameters such as electrostacking time and applied voltage, support buffers and their concentrations were investigated. Boric acid plus sodium hydroxide at 0.1mol/l concentration was selected as support buffer to improve the pre-concentration factor (PF) for As(V). An analytical range from 2.0 to 50.0mugl(-1), and 0.35mugl(-1) as limit of detection, when applied 750V for 20min, were achieved. Under these conditions, a pre-concentration factor of 4.8 was obtained. The proposed method was applied to determine As(V) in mineral water and natural water samples…
